In today’s blog I decided I’d talk a bit about where the fitness industry is at today and how we need to change and evolve and what we are trying to do at Max Results.
8 years ago we started our 30 day challenge. I was one of the first in the industry to start this type of training program, although, if you tune in to social media almost every single PT/studio is offering something of that ilk today.
My program was called “NO EXCUSES” and it was indeed just that. No alcohol, clean eating, calorie controlled, training between 6-7 sessions per week.
The results were pretty amazing too, in terms of weight loss. Guys average around 6-7kg and women around 4-5kg. Clients across the board were fitter and stronger too.
My thought process was get the clients living a regimented lifestyle, have great results and then slip across to “Train 4 x per week, watch what you eat” aka stick pretty closely to our eating plan around 80% of your life, 20% do what you like.
All pretty reasonable when you say it like that.
But, the reality is probably 10-15% actually do that.
Many finished the program and though phew, thank god that’s over, now, I can go back to my old way of life.
In fact, it was a client who asked recently if I thought she should sign up for another NO EXCUSES challenge, and I replied “for the 5th time?!” that prompted me to really think about the need and my personal responsibility to come up with something better.
I care for her, like I care for all our clients and the truth is we were failing her. Yes, of course she needed to accept personal responsibility too, but, the fact is if she has needed to do this program 5 times in 5 years, it wasn’t working. Not like I hoped.
I started thinking about what was needed to come up with something better. I believe to truly help someone lead a better life, losing weight and getting fitter/stronger is only 1 part of the puzzle. If you looked at social media though I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that was all it took.
But, that’s simply not true!!
I personally know plenty of people that have the body beautiful, look like they have the perfect life, but are deeply unhappy. I’m sure you the reader probably does too.
Its my contention that to be a well-rounded, happy person you need to be hitting the mark in 4 main areas of your life pretty consistently.
Physical, mental, emotional and Spiritual wellbeing. In the fitness industry we smash the physical component and generally completely discount the others. But, after 25 years of working in the industry I know its not enough to help someone really improve their life.
We have a highly intelligent team at Max Results with numerous staff members having completed post grad studies and when I broached my thoughts, their enthusiasm and excitement told me I was on the right path.
Together we started planning and developed a new program, a different program, a better program. The Max Results “12 week lifestyle program”. We decided 12 weeks because it’s my belief that after 90 days the things we’ve helped clients implement will become their “new normal”.
In the 12 week program We have set up a detailed daily checklist system so you can track how you are going at Life. Its amazing how many of us, myself included, often let life just happen to them rather than being in the drivers seat.
We track adherence to exercise, daily step count, nutrition which is based around intuitive eating, hydration, sleep, work productivity, mindfulness-presence, self-development, altruism and being comfortably uncomfortable.
We are only 2 weeks in and its been fascinating to watch the clients work through things.
Some are really challenged, some have taken to it like ducks to water.
Everyone is confronted in some way though, but, there’s no limit to self-knowledge and the more self-honest people are able to be I know the outcomes will be incredible and in some cases life changing.
In fact, after our first day induction, one of our clients the very next day signed up for a Uni Course that his heart has been telling him he must do, but, he had been procrastinating over. Amazing outcome!!
I’m doing the program myself, and, it was clear to see that my overall productivity was high early in the week but waned dramatically come Thursday and Friday.
Our mantra for the program is “Progress not perfection” so that’s my own little personal goal for this week. Keep kicking goals later in the week.
We intend to have updates as the program progresses on our social media, but, I’m truly excited and just had to share what we’ve started.
